The Highland County Arts Council will add to the 2019 Maple Festival celebration with musical performances on March 9th and March 16th at 3:00 p.m.
Thanks to the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, we were able to schedule performances by Tyler Hughes and Wayne Henderson and Helen White. These are two acts that provide Highland and the region with world-class performances. We are proud and grateful to be able to make them available.
Tyler Hughes is described as the embodiment of the musical tradition of the Appalachian Mountains. Hughes combines his skills as an award-winning banjo players and dancer to bring to life the songs and tunes that are the hallmarks of this unique culture. His extensive historical knowledge of the region makes for what reviewers have called “a highly entertaining and informative concert. A native of Southwest Virginia, Hughes has travelled internationally studying folk music and performing his repertory. His concert is at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 9th.
On Saturday, March 16th, Wayne Henderson and Helen White will make a return visit to Highland. Their 2017 concert was a sell-out performance. Henderson is a National Heritage Award recipient who was honored for his craftsmanship as a guitar maker and for his renowned style of Appalachian guitar playing. He has toured widely in the US as well as in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Joining him in the March 16th performance is singer, fiddler, guitarist and composer Helen White. She has accompanied Henderson on tour throughout US and Europe. When not playing with Henderson, White composes music for theatre and video projects. Her recorder of songs for children was a Booklist honoree. She is also the founder and director of the Junior Appalachian Musician program that introduces students to the musical heritage of the region.
Both concerts will be held at The Highland Center, 61 Highland Center Drive (just off Spruce Street) in Monterey, VA. Admission for each concert is $10 and will be collected at the door.
